The bookshop shelves heave with leadership texts, and the quirky title of this one might encourage the browser to pass it by as just another fad publication. Perhaps that is why the publishers feel that they have to make it dear that there are "No fads or quick fixes here." It would be a shame to pass this book by, especially for the student of management who wants to get to grips with what leadership is all about.

The book helps explain how leaders can bring about change for the better. It takes its strange title from a seminal article on leadership by Ohmann in the Harvard Business Review back in 1955.'Skyhooks', by the way, are apparently the bolts driven into mineshaft ceilings to stop them falling in and the analogy here is that they provide the solid foundations of leadership which keep business in shape whilst all around is "slipping and sliding away".

Er, yes... The value in the book is that it collects Ohmann's article together with 14 other writings by some of the most respected thinkers on leadership of the past few years. …
