April 16: Pakistani police arrested two suspected Islamic militants, one of whom was wanted in connection with the murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. [WP, 4/17]

April 21: The Pakistani central government gave a pro-government tribal militia until May 1 to prove that they were successfully fighting al-Qa'ida. If the tribes fail, the military threatened "tough action." [NYT, 4/22]

Following an army offensive into the semi-autonomous regions in the northwest of Pakistan, hundreds of armed farmers, accusing the government of destroying their poppy fields, took to the streets and burned pro-government paramilitary vehicles. [WP, 4/22]
