FCS Class Teams Up with Local Moms & Tots

Article excerpt

Careful scheduling and a meaningful partnership with Moms & Tots are the major ingredients of a program that has enhanced the lives of young children and teenagers in Billerica, Massachusetts: the Child Growth & Development (CGD) course. The connection with this parenting group started 8 years ago and continues as a tool to support both programs.

Moms & Tots of Billerica, Massachusetts began more than 12 years ago in response to the need for quality activities for preschoolers, their moms, and families. In addition to high school involvement, their activities include holiday parties, brunches, local trips, and play groups. The playgroup consists of a small number of moms with children who meet on a regular basis. Membership continues to grow, with the total at 119 members.

The CGD course is designed to provide high school juniors and seniors with a hands-on approach within the curriculum. The full-year course focuses on the stages of development from birth to age 5. Students participate in an internship during the last 4 to 6 weeks of the course and they have a monthly opportunity to interact with young children through the Moms & Tots program.

CGD students look forward to the monthly visits with the Moms & Tot's children. Each student is assigned one child, preferably the same child for each visit in order to develop consistency in the student-child relationship. …
