In early morning flurry an old building

releases aromas, banknote new. Soft thuds

sound repeatedly from a bolt unwinding.

No need for an alligator grip when a nip

at the selvedge allows scissors to slide.

Rickrack and ribbon work wonders

originality is prized, every penny counts

and zippers are still a novelty, while sewing

comes as easily as breath.

Taken from its stack of patterned colour

on the shelf, choice is the fabric of ritual.

Stance, a slight backwards lean from the waist

with hands firmly clasped at the front, almost

an attitude of prayer, as a peer through

narrowed eyes, limits options. Feeling

possibilities with index finger and thumb

leads to approval's nod. The magic mirror trick

clinches a transaction; held beside her face

the woman sees flowered nylon sway her daughter

through the Town Hall dance, guipure

become a collar trim in the church pew

at the wedding or her grandchild's christening.

Nimble scissors dangle from narrow strips
