thinking problem,' she said. 'I see you

out, I see you in. You're always

thinking about something,' she

said. 'You think too much.'

The bargirl who invites herself

home says, 'You know what your

problem is? It's your head. Just

stop thinking and you'll be fine.'

Processing fines at the Council

I am told not to ask questions.

'You're paid to work, simply function,

without thinking. Remember that.'

Friends are hiding books from me.

'It's for your own good.' She

counts every word I put in my

mouth. I love you, Honey,' she says.

My newspapers are rationed to MX.

'No bad news,' they say.

Films and plays are checked out

before I go, in case they promote

my misbehaviour. No fear, I

nod off at the ones chosen for me.

At T.A. I admit I have for years

thought badly of politicians, authority

and life in general and am a

failure at relationships. I have no

power over my thinking. I need

the God of Inanity to lead me

straight, to obey without

questioning, to trust blindly.

secretly at night in my bed I go

over the stories of Greek gods:

Aphrodite, Aries, cheeky Hermes

and vengeful Hera. Always in trouble,
