1 identify requirements: the starting point in any web development exercise is to create a brief, setting out what the site needs to achieve for the organisation.This is mainly an in-house process, though external consultants may prove useful by helping to shape suggestions and clarify ideas.

2 Define the options: once you know what you want to achieve, the next question is how? It may be, for example, that key elements of the site should be closely integrated from the start in order to achieve optimum speed and efficiency of operation. Outside expertise is likely to be essential at this point, as an in-depth knowledge of the technology is required.

3 Confirm costs and timing: with the requirements known and the best options for meeting them selected, a budget and timetable can be agreed.

4 Prepare site schematic and design concepts: the development team now knows what it has to do. its first step is to prepare a schematic setting out how the site will be organised. This is quite similar in principle to the site map found on many websites. At the same time, designers develop the concepts that will dictate page layouts, as well as any other design features: inter active links, animated logos, scrolling news headlines, for example.

Any new material required - words, photographs, graphics etc - should be sourced or commissioned. In addition, domain names should be registered (if they haven't already been) and server space should be secured.

5 Assemble pages: at this stage, Emanuel stresses the vital element of communication. "None of this process of development should take place out of sight of you, the client," he says.
