IT was gratifying for the IAM to have so many attendees at the ninth graduation ceremony at Loke Yew Hall at the University of Hong Kong.

The day began with the introduction of the stage party by Dr. Raymond Yeung, Programme Director and Subject Group Leader in Administrative Management, Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education.

Next came the graduation address by Jennifer Ng, Associate Professor, HeadDivision of Management Studies and Associate Director, HKUSPACE.

She told the graduates: "Professional training emphasises your ability to apply the knowledge and skills that you've acquired to specific, professional situations, and to display a strong sense of professionalism while doing so.

"In passing your IAM examinations, you have demonstrated that you can integrate knowledge and skills and apply them in the field of administrative management.

"Yet, we all realise that today is just the beginning and not the end. Ahead of you are more practical experiences to acquire, more self-learning to pursue, and increasingly greater responsibilities to take up, which require an increasingly sophisticated level of competence and expertise.

"It is through continuous learning that you proceed step by step from a fresh graduate in administrative management to a competent administrator, then a proficient administrator, and finally an expert administrator."

Human capital

She highlighted the importance of education: "This is fundamental to a society's development. A society's survival and continued prosperity hinge on the guality of its human capital.

"It is through education that people can optimise their development potential and continue to upgrade themselves.

"Business education, or specifically, our education programme in administrative management, could be considered a luxury by those who hold a utilitarian view of things.

"But this is how progress of the economy came about, through the transmission of knowledge, discovery of the unknown and advancement in management techniques.

"New ideas, such as applications of information technology in administrative management, are allowed to flourish, bringing about changes to enrich our society.

"At the same time, during the process of exploration, the future business leaders come to develop further their abilities and realise their potential in managing complex situations in today's business organisations. …
