Quilting Project

District J members of the Florida Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (FAFCS) are playing a key role in raising community awareness about the importance of preserving, visiting, and utilizing historical sites for educational purposes.

Charles Deering, of the famous International Harvester company, completed construction of an impressive Mediterranean Revival Style mansion in 1922. Today, the Charles Deering Stone House in south Miami is a restored and significant architectural preserve.

Personnel from the Deering Estate Foundation requested that District J members design and make a museum quality quilt featuring the Deering Foundation Crest for Mrs. Deering's bedroom. The Deering Estate Management Team and Foundation staff offered invaluable assistance, reference, and guidance.

When the group evaluated the project, we realized we would need to bring in some other experts from the local quilting and needlework guilds to assist with the project. In addition, services and funds were donated by By The Yard Fabric Store, Elegant Stitches Knit Shop, Royal Palm Chapter of the American Needlework Guild, Ocean Waves Chapter of the National Quilting Association, Beta Zeta Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, and City National Bank. …
