We are honored to help the Pension Real Estate Association with its mission of research and education by editing this special issue of the Journal of Real Estate Portfolio Management. Using the topics of interest from the Plan Sponsor Council, we developed a call for papers asking the academic and professional research community to address those issues. We had a large response with nineteen papers and after the arduous academic process of double-blind reviews on each paper, we are proud to present you with the six best papers in this special issue.

The first paper is entitled "Investment Styles and Style Boxes in Equity Real Estate: Can the Emerging Model Succeed in Classifying Real Estate Alternatives?" by Ronald Kaiser. It will help institutional real estate investors to evaluate the many different real estate fund alternatives using a new categorization method.

The next two papers should help readers to analyze their allocation decisions more thoroughly and are entitled "The Return Due to Diversification of Real Estate to the U.S. Mixed-Asset Portfolio" by Stephen Lee and "How Funding Ratios Affect Pension Plan Portfolio Allocations" by Timothy Craft.

The fourth paper that takes a unique look at some real estate risk characteristics and is entitled "Real Estate in the Real World: Dealing with Non-Normality and Risk in an Asset Allocation Model," which was written by Mark S. Colcman and Asich Mansour. …
