We hope you enjoy the variety of articles in this issue. Six were contributed through a joint arrangement by IMA and the American Accounting Association (AAA) via Carl Smith, IMA's professor-in-residence, and they are derived from presentations made at IMA's Annual Conference in Nashville, Tenn., in June 2003. Those articles were written by Audrey Taylor, Savya Rafai, Kevin McNelis, Gary Whitsett, Susan Hughes, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, Bruce Dehning, Kevin Dow, Thoephanis Stratopoulos, Mike Thomas, Kenneth Lorek, and Lee Willinger. The articles by Brian Ballou, Dan Heitger, Richard Tabor, Allen Schiff, Jonathan Schiff, Donald Holmes, and Richard Hurley are from our regular IMA review process.

If the usual budgeting process frustrates you, take a look at the article on strategic budgeting in which the authors show you how to identify true departmental excesses so you can reallocate resources as necessary without endangering the quality of service or the jobs of your employees.
