Student Engagement Report

Established in 2001 as a project of the Community College Leadership Program at the University of Texas at Austin, the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) is designed to produce information about community college quality and performance. Its survey instrument, "The Community College Student Report," provides information on student engagement as a key indicator of learning.

Engagement by Design: 2004 findings has been published and is online at This document is the result of a survey of more than 92,000 students at 152 member colleges administered during spring 2004. Students responded to questions about their primary goals, their views of academic and support services, how much time they spent studying, interactions with faculty, and other indicators of student engagement. Participating colleges received their survey results along with guidance and analysis they can use to improve their programs and services for students. The document is designed to serve as a benchmarking instrument that establishes national norms on educational practice and performance, a diagnostic tool to identify areas in which a college can enhance students' educational experiences, and a monitoring device to document and improve institutional effectiveness over time. …
