This volume is the first of a handsome new series of texts and studies, in hardback, devoted to the German heroic epic. The edition of Dietrichs Flucht, a heroic poem in rhyming couplets from the second half of the thirteenth century, which presents the fantastic genealogy of Dietrich von Bern, followed by his exile and first return to the 'Roman lands', replaces those of E. Martin (1866, repr. 1967), an eclectic text fusing the different recensions of the poem, and F. H. von der Hagen and A. Primisser (1825), a single-manuscript edition based on P (Heidelberg). New line numbering is introduced with no record of the old, unhelpfully complicating reference to the dictionaries and secondary literature. There are four 'complete' manuscripts, in two of which (RW) the genealogical introduction (lines 1-2297) is omitted, and one of which (P) presents an abridged recension. The edition follows A ('Ambraser Heldenbuch', early sixteenth century) for lines 1-2297, and switches to the earliest manuscript, R ('Riedegger Handschrift', late thirteenth century), for the main narrative, with parallel text for the few passages where alternative recensions exist. …
