This well-informed, readable, and high-quality English translation of William of Puylaurens's chronicle admirably complements that of Peter of Vaux-de-Cernay's History of the Albigensian Crusade by the same authors (Woodbridge, 1998); together with Janet Shirlcy's The Songofthe Cathar Wars: A History of the Albigensian Crusade (Aldershot, 1996) it completes the availability in FJnglish of the main narrative sources for the crusade against Occitan heretics. Elegantly produced, the volume contains four maps and useful genealogical tables of the counts of Toulouse and their relations with the House of Barcelona/ Aragon and the French Crown. …
