L'Offrande du coeur. Medieval and Early Modem Studies in Honour of Glynnis Cropp, ed. Margaret Burrell and Judith Grant (Christchurch: Canterbury University Press in association with Massey University, 2004). xv + 160 pp. ISBN 1-877257-12-5. £49.95. This is an unusually homogeneous and satisfying Festschrift - and a rather charming one: it oozes real affection for the honorand. It opens with four excellent papers from the doyens of Christine de Pizan studies - one of Professor Cropp's particular interests: Liliane Dulac countering the stereotype which sees Christine as joyless, Angus Kennedy on Christine as an advocate of social harmony, James Laidlaw on her virtuoso command of the rondeau form, and Nadia Margolis on her encyclopedism. Other scholars turn to Occitan, also a preoccupation of the honorand: Peter Ricketts on an Occitan version of Gautier de Coincy's Priere de Theophile transposed for a female voice, Roy Rosenstein on the prevalence of the 'fictional/fictive tensó'. A few more miscellaneous papers are also included: Keith Atkinson on rival medieval interpretations of Boethius, Brian Merrilees with an edition of an interesting Old French version of the story of Alexander and the philosopher from the Disciplina clematis (from a manuscript, Angers BM 498, which also includes a remarkable FrenchLatin dictionary), Alison Hanham on one of Caxton's translations, Denis Drysdall on emblems (and with a rather inspiring conclusion as to the wealth of socio-cultural understanding which they can, when properly interpreted, afford), a nicely autobiographical account, from Maxwell Walkley, of his discovery of what seemed to be a lost little treatise by Jean Gerson (a wonderful little word-picture, incidentally, of Jean Rychner's seminars . …
