The UK has a well-respected record of urban regeneration programmes stretching back over many years. Although these have often been concerned with the physical infrastructure of run-down city areas, many have also attempted to address associated social and community problems through aspirational and innovative ideas. An example of this is to be found in the work of the Belfast Healthy Cities project, which is seeking to tackle local health needs and is closely associated with the WHO Healthy Cities network.

The Belfast project has recently produced two booklets. The first of these, entitled 'Understanding the Links', provides a well-constructed study of the factors influencing health in Northern Ireland, including living and working conditions, lifestyles, education and housing. Those involved in improving people's health will find useful material here, both for developing their own work and for training others. The analysis is based on up-to-date research information and good links are made with local, national and international policies for reducing health inequalities. …
