Gas Company Puts Heat on Government's Fuel Poverty Plans

British Gas have lent their support to Help the Aged to highlight the issue of winter deaths in the UK.

Along with a hard-hitting advertising campaign (see image) to increase public awareness, the British Gas Help the Aged Partnership is calling on the government to act urgently.

Numbers of unnecessary winter deaths in the UK are, according to the Partnership, much higher than in comparable EU countries. They suggest that England and Wales need to implement a scheme similar to the Scottish Central Heating Programme, which ensures that all pensioner households have central heating and insulation regardless of income.

"In a nation that has the fourth largest economy in the world and values human rights and dignity, it is simply not acceptable that our older people should die as a direct result of cold weather," says Help the Aged Director of Policy Paul Cann.

The Partnership has published an information pack 'The Cold Can Kill' which can be downloaded from www.helptheaged.org.uk/winterdeaths.

Since the launch of the British Gas Help the Aged campaign, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has unveiled the document 'Fuel Poverty in England - The Government's Plan for Action'. …
