Society in Coalition Response to Public Health White Paper

As a leading partner of the new collaborative group Coalition for Public Health Action, The Society has broadly welcomed the Government's White Paper, 'Choosing Health: Making Healthy Choices Easier'.

The Coalition comprises of all five public health bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Faculty of Public Health, the Royal Institute of Public Health and the UK Public Health Association, and represents 20,000 UK public health professionals.

The White Paper includes limited action on smoking, such as banning smoking in public only where food is served. The Coalition called these proposals 'positive steps', but expressed concern that this was a missed opportunity to achieve a real and hugely significant health outcome.

"We question why a minority of the population should be subjected to the health risks of second hand smoke by dint of the fact they work in, or frequent, exempt premises," said the statement. "We are also dismayed that the proposed incomplete ban will not be implemented until 2007."

On launching the Public Health White Paper, secretary of State for Health John Reid said: "We have listened to the public about what they want and looked hard at the evidence of what is effective. …
