At the recent General Convention in Denver, July 2000, the speaker at the Historical Society dinner was the Hon. John T. Noonan, Jr. Judge Noonan is United States Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is the author of The Lustre of Our Country: The American Experience of Religions Freedom ( 1998).

John Witte, professor o( law and ethics at Emory University has remarked, "...this book is going to be read in the twenty-second century...and people will say, 'This is a pristine statement of American religious liberty, as it is understood by a high authority with a very gifted pen'. "

I believe that Lustre, of Our Country will join a select line of march of great American essays on religion-and their application to national life and thought-which have challenged and changed the American religious and intellectual landscape: Jonathan Edwards, Tlie Nature of Religious Affections; Horace Bushnell, Christian Nurture; John W. Nevin, The Mystical Presence; William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience and Hans Frei, The Eclipse of the Biblical Narrative."

These volumes remind us that the energy and animation of serious religious writing in America lie not in systematic or dogmatic theology but in their anchorage in particular historical issues. …
