Minority Nursing Faculty Shortage: Some Thoughts

Dear ABNF members and ABNF Journal subscribers:

Several weeks ago, I had the privilege of taking a South African nurse to lunch. In order to really impress her, I took her to the Peachtree Restaurant here in Kansas City, Missouri, located in the Vine Street Re-development area of the city. Much effort is being put forth to reestablish Vine Street as it was "in the day." My friend, Thembisile Khanyile, really enjoyed herself. "Most of the time," she said, "we are taken to the ghetto areas and shown Black America. This place is wonderful". Thembisile enjoyed the jazz background music which is so familiar in Kansas City. She learned something about American culture and I learned that the issues she faces in South Africa are very similar to the ones we encounter here in the United States. But how does this experience relate to our special journal topic?

The topic chosen for this edition is truly educational. As I attempted to delve into the grooves of my brain to determine what I knew about Caribbean nursing, it didn't take long to realize that I knew very little. …
