Oct. 20: Iran's Defense Minister 'AIi Shamkhani announced that Iran test-fired an improved version of the Shahab-3 ballistic missile. [BBC, 10/20]

A senior religious leader in Iran, Grand Ayatollah Kazem Ha'eri, severed ties with Iraqi Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr for encouraging his followers to fight US troops. Citing the damage done to holy shrines due to fighting in Najaf earlier this year, Ha'eri said that while he blamed the US and Britain for the damage, direct fighting with US forces was not a correct move. Oct. 24: Iran rejected a proposal by Britain, Germany and France to suspend its uranium enrichment program and urged those countries to offer a "more balanced" proposal. [NYT, 10/25]

Nov. 2: Iranian Nobel Prize winner Shirin 'Ebadi sued the US government for blocking the publication of her memoirs. American companies cannot publish books by authors in Iran, Cuba, and Sudan. 'Ebadi said that blocking her memoirs would be a "critical missed opportunity" for Americans to learn more about Iran. [BBC, 11/2]
