Graduate Education to ease the Global Nursing Shortage

Global Scholarship Alliance, which partners with United States universities and health care organizations in efforts to improve nursing globally, has announced that 28 nurse-scholars from the Philippines will pursue master's of science in nursing degrees at Xavier University in Cincinnati and Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York. Participants in GSA's program receive full scholarships to American universities and are eligible to work part time at university-affiliated hospitals during the period of study. Upon completion of the program, they are required to return to their home countries for at least two years to lead and train clinical instructors, nurse leaders, or hospital administrators.

Requirements for participation include a baccalaureate degree in nursing and RN licensure in one's home country. Participants must undergo a face-toface interview, have two or more years of hospital experience, and pass a language proficiency exam as well as US licensing and immigration requirements before arriving in the United States. Currently, GSA provides scholarships to nurses from the Philippines, India, Canada, and the United Kingdom and has partnerships in Kansas, Ohio, New York, Minnesota, and Texas. …
