WELCOME to Student Advisor. In this issue, an article by Carl Evans gives us food for thought about why we are studying and the need to develop ourselves professionally. I suggest that it could be useful to keep this in your Professional Development Portfolio if you keep one. Also make sure that you share the article with your line manager or boss to support your studying with the IAM. Point out the benefits to your organisation of this.

The theme for this edition of Manager is information and communications technology and how it affects our businesses. As students, you are well aware of how technology can affect your learning. Technological advances in the last ten years have made the learning experience very different. Gone are the days of drafting out assignments and case studies, re-drafting and writing out a completed version. Today we use the computer to perform these functions and we can almost instantly make a new updated copy of our work.

There are some down sides to this though.

Firstly, we need to practice the art of writing so that we can complete exams. We need to be able to communicate our meaning quickly without this need to draft and re-draft. We need to be able to communicate in standard English with its spelling and grammar conventions. For you as students, the art of writing is all important, and is a skill that has to be practised and honed. …
