Apr. 19: A draft report was issued by the National Transportation Board concerning the 1998 Egypt Air crash. The report said that the pilot, Gamil Batouti, deliberately forced the plane to dive into the Atlantic. The Egyptian side denied the conclusion of the report. [4/20 NYT, FT, WP]

May 15: A former Egyptian Ambassador to the US, Russia and the UN, Ahmad Mahir, was appointed Egypt's Foreign Minister. He will succeed `Amr Moussa, who would become Secretary General of the Arab League. [5/16 NYT, FT]

May 21: Saad Eddin Ibrahim, a leading civil society activist and a prominent critic of the regime in Egypt was sentenced to seven years of hard labor. He was found guilty of receiving unauthorized money, embezzlement, and forgery. Twenty Seven of his followers were also found guilty and received sentences, which varied from five year hard labor to one year suspended. …
