OBITUARIES: Barbara Van Brimmer, 1947-2003

Barbara Van Brimmer, associate professor and curator of the Medical Heritage Center, John A. Prior Health Sciences Library, Ohio State University, died in Columbus on October 9, 2003. Barbara was born in Napoleon, Ohio, on November 15, 1947. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in botany at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) in 1969 and her master's of library science at the University of Mississippi in 1984. Her scholarship and professional interest focused on medical history preservation, culminating in the creation of the Medical Heritage Center in 1997.

As chair of MLAs History of the Health Sciences Section and as president of both the Ohio Health Sciences Library Association and the Central Ohio Health Sciences Library Association, she served the wider profession in major capacities and left behind an exemplary legacy. She served on fifty university committees and thirty professional committees, both local and national.

Barbara joined the Prior Health Sciences Library staff in 1985, and, in her eighteen years with the library, she held seven different positions, each drawing on her diverse strengths and interests in the field. …
