After having lived in East Africa for twenty years, author J.W. Heldring came upon the name of the young German explorer Albrecht Roscher. While out to "discover" East Africa, Roscher was killed in northwest Mozambique in 1860 and Heldring wanted to learn more about him and the unexplained circumstances of his death. The author's quest took him far and wide and led to this biography.

Heldring writes a fascinating, readable book but from the perspective of a historian, this is not a scholarly history. The list of archives and libraries he visited throughout the world is impressive, but he provides so few citations that one does not know where most of the information originates-most of the notes he does provide cite secondary sources while others leave the reader asking "why?"
