Writing at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Albans, in the tradition of his illustrious predecessors Roger Wendover and Matthew Paris, Thomas Walsingham was the last great English monastic chronicler. It is therefore particularly unfortunate that he was so poorly served by his Victorian editors, who scattered mangled fragments of his work across several different volumes of the Rolls Series. However, in their defence, it has to be said that the manuscripts are themselves rather fragmentary. The problem lies in the fact that his major work, the Chronica maiora, underwent a constant process of revision; in particular, his original account for the years 1376-7 (now known as the 'Scandalous Chronicle') contained a virulent series of denunciations of John of Gaunt, which had to be replaced with a toned-down version when a copy of the Chronica maiora was made for Gaunt's brother Thomas of Woodstock. Furthermore, following the example of Matthew Paris, Walsingham produced an abbreviated version of his work, now known as the 'Short Chronicle', which was frequently combined with parts of the fuller version to provide composite texts.
