This collection of five essays brings together the editor's previous research interests in migration in Anglo-Saxon England and community in the pre-modern period, offering a series of case studies of the experience of homes and homelessness from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Renaissance. Howe provides an introduction to the volume, which surveys the ideas and their contexts, and suggests a growing defamiliarization with the concepts as we move back through time: thus the volume is structured to move from Renaissance to early medieval society; the volume also moves from southern to northern cultures, and across historical, literary, and art-historical evidence. …
