To know that a book consists entirely of papers from a research seminar does not necessarily inspire confidence. In the case of Le Médiéviste devant ses sources, however, we clearly have an exceptional research seminar, for the papers are uniformly well researched, well documented, and well written. The foreword in particular is a model of its type: despite its brevity (just five pages), it not only introduces each of the sixteen papers but provides a convincing contextualization for them as a group. Although the editors note that they are not trying to cover every possible type of historical source, the papers in fact cover a remarkably broad range: chronicles, monastic and lay; decretals and other legal documents; financial accounts; records from inquisitorial court and monastic chapter; sermon collections, computus, iconography, and satire. …
