New and Exciting in Nursing Education

Indeed, the buzz in the hallways was audible as nurse educators spoke of the many new initiatives presented during concurrent sessions. What I found most significant was a focus on new and exciting rather than business as usual.

MANY OF US VISITED BALTIMORE THIS SEPTEMBER to participate in the NLN Education Summit 2005. Not only was there record attendance, but the presentations of new and exciting initiatives implemented in nursing education throughout the country were remarkable. Quality nursing education is the primary focus of the NLN and an important uniting theme for all of us who have dedicated our professional lives to this mission.

In particular, I was fascinated by the poster presentations and only wish that all of them could be published in future issues of Nursing Education Perspectives. Consider some of the themes from the posters, and ask yourself whether you would want to know more. Concept mapping, interprofessional practice, use of artistic learning, reflective writing, and competency-based evaluation are just a few of the ideas presented. Ask yourself, are these "new and exciting" markers in the development of nursing education?

The posters represented only some of the innovations discussed at this meeting.
