HOME for HISTORY

The 175th anniversary year for the Society begins little more than a month from now. We will mark this exciting milestone throughout 2006, and not with just one event. The highlight will be the opening of our handsome new wing, which will provide much-needed space for expansion of collections, exhibitions, and programming. The $16-million structure, now nearing completion, is the capstone of the $55-million fund-raising effort, 175th Anniversary Campaign: Home for History.$%

o The first of severafhigh points during the year will be the Alexander W. Weddell Lecture on March 23, which will inaugurate the 500-seat auditorium in the new wing. The speaker will be noted Civil War historian and former VHS trustee James I. Robertson, Jr.

* In mid-July we will host a series of special events to open the building for campaign contributors and our entire membership. There will be a free family open house for the community. These events will mark the unveiling of the spectacular new long-term exhibition, Virginians at Work, which tells the story of business and labor through four centuries of our state's past.

* On October 19 and 20 we will hold a conference entitled "Virginians in the White House: The Presidency from Washington to Wilson. …
