During the 30th annual conference of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), educators discussed the problems that colleges are faced with in providing students with a successful education. One of the biggest problems educators and students in higher education are faced with today is the lack of funding. As the need for financial help for students is growing, the money for grants is being reduced and this is having a significant impact on student retention.

Consequently, many students cannot afford to live on campus and must work in addition to carrying a full class load, creating the kinds of situations that may put students at risk. The Education Trust has documented an overall gap between enrollment rates and graduation rates at colleges and universities that are traditionally Black. Dr. Malvin Williams, vice president for academic affairs at Alcorn State University of Mississippi states that answers lie in money and best practices and believes NAFEO should study the best practices currently in use at institutions so that these may be implemented into other institutions. …
