Dear ABNF Members and Readers:

Once again we are beginning a new academic year. In so doing, we are confronted with new challenges and some lingering issues. Students and their concerns are some of our lingering issues. The different institutions have expressed commitments to increasing diversity within the student body. Yet for many years now, our diverse students continue to be vulnerable. Some of them enter nursing lacking the necessary writing, science and math skills needed to survive in our academic environments. Others lack financial resources. Still, other potential nursing student are unaware of the discipline nursing requires and the life changes nursing demands. How do we prepare our young people for our way of life?

Long before the student enters our schools of nursing, perhaps there was a nurse who was instrumental in encouraging her/him to take a look a nursing. Perhaps we had a brief encounter at the grocery store, or we made a presentation to a scouting group, or our neighbor's child came over to speak to us regarding nursing. Whatever the circumstance, in some small or large way, we made an impact on the individual's occupational choice. Now stands the student at the threshold of our institution ready and eager to become a nurse. Enthusiasm is high! The student is invincible. This pleasant picture soon vanishes and after several weeks of exuberant enthusiasm spirits wane. Alas, the anatomy test has brought the student to a screeching halt. …
