This interesting and well written book examines and evaluates controversies related to family violence. The book provides a forum for experts in the field to (a) present their research findings, (b) critique others' research work, (c) discuss further research needs and issues, and (d) present methods and ideas for reducing and/or preventing family violence. Contributors were asked to highlight disagreements about family violence specific to their programs of study and comment on related controversies. Not all of the authors agreed to air the dirty laundry.

The book is divided into four sections that address issues in (a) conceptualization, (b) definition and measurement, (c) causation, and (d) social intervention. Detailed section overviews are provided

Many important divergent, complex, and timely arguments are presented and synthesized. Some arguments are academic, some practice driven. Such factors as the conceptual framework utilized, the population studied, and the processes and influences in achieving study results were considered in the debate among the contributors. Importantly, the arguments demand that family violence researchers and practitioners attend to the moral and political ramifications of their work. …
