Remarried Family Relationships. Lawrence H. Ganong & Marilyn Coleman. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage. 1994. 183 pp. Hardcover ISBN 08039-5122-1. $34.00 cloth, $15.95 paper.

Lawrence H. Ganong and Marilyn Coleman advance the understanding of remarried families by summarizing and synthesizing the results of empirical studies and works by clinicians on remarried families into a concise, readable book. Ganong and Coleman note that empirical studies of remarried families have expanded from about 11 studies in 1979 to a well-recognized field of study. As leading scholars in the field, Ganong and Coleman are well positioned to integrate clinical and empirical works on remarried families. into an overview of key issues relating to remarried families.

Ganong and Coleman use a "normative-adaptive perspective," designed to identify factors related to the effective functioning of remarried families. Chapter 1 defines and describes variations in remarried family forms; provides a history of research, development of the field, theory, and clinical approaches; and presents the current context of remarried families. In Chapter 2, a range of paths toward remarried family life are presented. Chapter 3 examines stages and interactions in the relationships of remarried couples. Chapters 4 and 5 present issues in stepparent-stepchild relationships, parent-child relationships, and extended stepfamily relations. Chapter 6 posits that systems theory guides clinical work with stepfamilies and includes an overview of seminal models of family development (Papernow's and McGoldrick and Carter's models). Recommendations for future research on remarried families are presented in Chapter 7.

Due to its comprehensive scope, this book stands out as the single most valuable current publication on remarried families. …
