Kathy Smith is a 51-year-old Family and Consumer Sciences/Home Economics Careers and Technology (FCS) teacher at Southern High School, in California's Los Angeles County. Most of her 26 years of teaching have been at this school.

A typical workday finds Kathy teaching five Consumer and Family Studies classes during the school's six-period day. Although some FCS teachers have developed occupational courses for their junior and senior students, Kathy maintains a strong program of classes that prepares students to balance their home and work lives. She has maintained this full-time schedule for most of her career. Each of her classes now includes more than 30 students.

Kathy has definitely seen some changes in the profession during her tenure. At professional development meetings, she learns that more of her colleagues are teaching full-time and also that their class sizes are growing.

In each of her classes, Kathy encourages the students to pursue an FCS-related career. However, she seldom mentions that they should consider teaching FCS as their career. Instead, she usually focuses on careers in child development, food service, fashion design and merchandising, and interior design. …
