Alongside the publication of original articles, the EJLP has a regular section devoted to making available a selection of documents that have already entered the public domain in some form. These include policy documents, reports, briefings, extracts from legislation, articles of advocacy and other items that can inform our readers about what is happening in the world of language policy in a broad sense. Recent issues have presented documents published by the main institutions of the European Union and the Council of Europe, by governmental and non-governmental organisations at national and international level as well as opinion pieces that encapsulate a particular viewpoint on language policy.

Items in the "Interventions" section are published for relevance to issues in language policy interest rather than as expressions of the editorial position of the journal. However, we also publish documents of the Conseil européen pour les langues/European Language Council (CEL/ELC), which is the journal's sponsoring association.

In the present number, we publish a substantial presentation of the European Commission's language policy that was delivered at the November 2016 Forum of the CEL/ELC by Luca Tomasi of the Commission. He emphasises the diverse and changing language context in which we now live and points to the challenges faced by education, particularly language education, in responding to the newly arising needs. …
