Since his death at the age of sixty, appreciation for the songs of Erich Wolfgang Korngold has grown considerably. His songs are lush, intricate, and, along with the postromantic songs of Strauss and Mahler, reminiscent of the hothouse atmosphere of Vienna of the Jugendstil period. Once dismissed as perhaps nothing more than "movie music," the world has come to appreciate the importance and beauty of Korngold's Heder, as well as the performance challenges inherent in their complex harmonies and wide ranging melodies.

This year marks the sixtieth anniversary of the composer's death. …
