Ever wondered why? filing systems are like they' are? Or who the go-to people were on office technology? Look no further than the IAM. Right from its formation, the IAM's founder Professor Lawrence R. Dicksee blazed a trail as he sought to forward the use of technology in the office. His works on office machinery and business methods set a benchmark from which the Institute continued to live up to.

He was an innovator as was shown in a lecture Dicksee gave in 1916 to the Members of the Chartered Accountant Students Society of London. The lecture, entitled "Machinery as an aid to Accountancy" is still available today' and its clear he is knowingly treading on toes, challenging the received wisdom and breaking down the barriers to progress, especially as 60 to 70 per cent of office workers were away fighting the First World War.
