Half of British accountants fear the growing uncertainty around the country's role in Europe could hamper businesses this year, according to a survey of 500 members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW) in England and Wales.

As the UK heads into a General Election campaign dominated by arguments about EU membership, a poll suggests that just 3 per cent of accountancy companies believe the debate will be beneficial to their business. More than four in ten firms also see the uncertain outcome of the election as a potential hindrance to their business.

£13 billion worth of goods were exported by British firms, to EU member states, in October 2014 alone.

"All the posturing over Europe is giving businesses pause for thought. It is imperative that the debate listens to business concerns, as the rhetoric is potentially damaging to British business interests," said Stephen Ibbotson, director of business at the ICAEW. …
