Introduction

To help map the landscape of Ann Charters's contributions to Beat Studies and her work's demarcation of the field itself, we solicited testimonials from Beat Studies scholars, members of the Beat Studies Association, and contributors to the Journal of Beat Studies. We sought personal testimonials that assessed and explained the importance of Charters's pioneering work to our own later projects and that attested to the impact of her specific scholarship, as well as the influence of her publications and commitments, on the shaping of individual projects and the field of Beat Studies. We hoped to hear about the experience of being mentored by Charters and about being her colleague in Beat Studies, for even though she has many colleagues, no one else has yet evinced the scope, accuracy, and inclusive scholarly vision that Charters has brought to the constructions of the Beat movement and generation. …
