Dear Sir,

I regret to inform you that the Scottish Byron Society established in March 2007 with colleagues Eric Wishart, Dr Xsuza Varga, Dr Jane Stabler and Dr Gavin Hopps has now ceased. The Society was established by me in conjunction with Eric Wishart following the death of the late Elma Dangerfield who had Scottish links and did so much for Byron Societies in the post war world and because of Byron's Scottish ancestry.

Like many Societies, it worked because of the excellent administration, in Edinburgh led by Eric, who arranged, in conjunction with other Literary Societies in the City, an excellent series of lectures which were well attended. The Society was administered in a way that did not require a formal membership. It was, through Eric's ebullience and enthusiasm, that it was able to operate so well.

As many will know, regrettably because of Eric's illness, he has had to give up his literary activities. Although, there are several excellent and supportive Byronists in Edinburgh-Tom Mole, Jane Stabler and David McClay-understandably they are unable to give time for secretarial administration which needs someone who is living in Edinburgh or nearby. …
