What can a scholarly journal print? What should a scholarly journal print? We have debated among ourselves whether we should or should not include-against our policy thus far-an editorial preface. We adhere to a rigorous peer review, and articles that emerge from it, generally with some revision, we put forward for publication. Folk and popular, oral to mass-mediated narrative in all their major and minor genres, address matters that delight and frighten, arouse as well as concern those who produce and receive them. In times past, some of those matters considered socially taboo, particularly in the realm of erotica, were told as well as collected and analyzed, but rarely printed, not even in scholarly arcana. Political humor has often been considered an endangering substance, while, simultaneously, demonstrating the power of humor to offer encouragement in dire times. We include in this issue an article on war humor that has undergone rigorous peer review; the material stems from the recent past and is situated within a time and region of ongoing political and military confrontation. …
