The Importance of Health Science Faculty to Student Success

Dear Colleagues:

During the past few weeks I have had the great pleasure of attending several graduation ceremonies for an array of people who are special to me: students in the university where I work, family members at high schools and colleges, children of friends, and friends of my children. Each graduation was filled with excitement for younger and older graduates moving on to the next chapter of life, career, study, and learning. Faculty members have encouraged each graduate to continue learning formally and informally, in classrooms, on the job, in groups and individually.

Faculty members taught graduates to be thankful for successes, and thankful for lessons learned from experiences that may not have garnered the desired success. There were no failures; there were only opportunities to learn and grow, rise when falls occur, seek positive support, and move forward. The educational programs provided a foundation for the next phase of life's journey. Faculty have facilitated opportunities for students to walk with confidence to demonstrate a firm foundation of knowledge, openness to learning, resources to strengthen areas in need of reinforcement, and how to create within themselves better and stronger individuals. …
