This issue of the Journal of Healthcare Management kicks off 2017 with two new column topics for the year-patient experience and safety-and an interview with a distinguished health administration faculty leader.

The columns and research articles in this issue address important and timely topics as a new administration in Washington, DC, works to reshape public policy. These topics include ethical dilemmas experienced by accountable care organizations (ACOs), rural access to specialty care, scheduling methodologies for the patient-centered medical home, and factors associated with Magnet status in U.S. hospitals.

I had the honor to interview Sherril B. Gelmon, DrPH, FACHE, professor of health systems management and policy at the Oregon Health & Science University and Portland State University School of Public Health. Dr. Gelmon shares her passion as a researcher and educator in working effectively with community agencies and providers. She also stresses the importance of interprofessional learning and combining academic education with field experiences to prepare health administration students and young professionals with a broader perspective on communities and population health.

In the patient experience column, Jason A. Wolf, PhD, urges healthcare leaders to reconsider patient experience for all that it encompasses. As Dr. Wolf explains, experience is the key driver of four fundamental healthcare objectives-clinical outcomes, financial outcomes, consumer loyalty, and community reputation-and by committing to action, leaders can take advantage of the strategic opportunities that experience presents.
