PRACTITIONER APPLICATION: Emotional Intelligence and Burnout in Academic Radiation Oncology Chairs

In their research, Holliday et al. investigate the possible correlation between high performance and emotional intelligence (EI) in physician executives. Sagacious executive recruitment is costly and consumes significant quantities of both time and money; so any human resource tool that shortens this time frame, improves the likelihood of proper selection, identifies administrative and leadership effectiveness, and suggests potential retention issues is valuable indeed.

Over the past 50 years, many publications have discussed the meaning, implications, value, and applicability of EI, although the general concepts have existed since antiquity. The readers of this journal need no reminding of how the concepts underlying EI resonate throughout all human interactions; consequently, the relative paucity of information demonstrating (or refuting) the relevance of EI in the recruitment, retention, and effectiveness of senior executives is surprising. There can be no discounting the influence of EI on the fields of psychology, human resources, self-help, and education (to name a few), yet the full extent, relevance, and definitive applicability of EI to executive recruitment and retention yearns for systematic analysis. The research by Holliday et al. adds a valuable data point. Furthermore, the authors' decision to focus on a specific cohort-academic chairs of radiation oncology-is commendable because it limits selection bias from the statistical biases that undermine valid and reproducible research. …
