I am always struck that no matter the context provided or the information offered, these landscapes of death, memory, and suffering go either unnoticed or unengaged with . Without fail, all or all-but-one of my students have never heard of Angel Island, the Chinese Exclusion Acts, or the effects they had on Chinese emigrants trying to come to the United States . This angle of Angel Island's United States Immigration Station points out this "denial" of the past, and the utter lack of effort to see, understand, and empathize with other perspectives . This frame reaches well beyond San Francisco, the United States, or even immigration, to represent any memorial landscape - and thus perspective - void of either context or engagement This unfortunate family found their way into my frame, but I have no desire to specifically call them out . …
