This neat little book, perfect for carrying in a pocket or in hand luggage, introduced me to a variety of new ways of thinking about mountains. It covers the impermanent nature and vulnerability of mountain environments, and their importance as providers of water, biological resources, human cultural diversity and opportunities for adventure and spectacle. The author has wide experience of mountains, both as an academic with an interest in climate change, as a contributor to international studies of the issues facing mountainous regions, and as a rock climber. He draws on a wide range of examples, many from parts of the world not often visited by UK textbooks.

The 'short' and easy-to-read format limits detailed descriptions, but offers tempting 'tasters' for further investigation. …
