To the Editor:

I appreciated the review of my book Beethoven's Symphonies: An Artistic Vision in the Beethoven Journal (vol. 31/2, Winter 2016, p. 97). But on one point I must enter a correction. Your review says that in my epilogue I discuss the "performance of Beethoven s music in the Jewish ghetto during the Nazi occupation of Poland. The phrase "the Jewish ghetto" is misleading. It is true that I confined my discussion to the performance of the Fifth Symphony by the Łódź ghetto inhabitants in 1942 and on what the chroniclers tell us Beethovens music meant to them in the horrendous conditions in which they were living. But in addition to this very large ghetto there were, according to the United States Holocaust Museum website, "at least one thousand ghettos in German-occupied and annexed Poland and the Soviet Union alone" in which hundreds of thousands of Jews were imprisoned, waiting to be deported to the death camps. …
