Special Feature: Kellogg Institute Exemplary Practicum Summaries

The following pages present the concluding segment of the Journal of Developmental Education 's special feature publishing summaries of select exemplary practicums submitted by Kellogg Institute alumni. A major contribution of the National Center for Developmental Education (NCDE) over the past 40 years has been its focus on professional development for faculty, staff, and administrators working with underrepresented student cohorts in postsecondary education. Highlighting the excellent work alumni have provided to their institutions and students via practicums allows us to recognize and celebrate their definitive research-based models for implementing new curriculum, evaluating programs, integrating services, and more.

Practicum summaries presented in this issue describe projects to develop a professional development program model, to build a structured learning assistance program paired with developmental mathematics courses, and to measure the effectiveness of a newly designed reading strategy course via an evaluation design comparing outcomes from the previous reading course. Readers may note that many practicums were ahead of their time in addressing topics that have risen to the forefront in subsequent years: professional development has been highlighted in much of the recent research as essential, a learning assistance program paired with mathematics parallels the corequisite concept, and course/program evaluation of student progress and outcomes is imperative-mandated in some institutions-especially with redesign structural and curricular changes. …
