Claudio Lagomarsini here provides the first modern critical edition of that portion of the cycle of Guiron le Courtois narrating the adventures of the 'Bruns', a noble lineage whose most famous representative is Guiron himself. The Guiron cycle is a vast compilation dating from the thirteenth century, comprising what are generally termed the Roman de Meliadus, the Roman de Guiron, and the Suite Guiron. In its various forms it provides a prequel to the earlier and now better-known Lancelot-Grail and Tristan en prose. As is so often the case with the multi-part cycles chronicling the Arthurian and pre-Arthurian world, the Guiron material survives in different recensions and in combination with an assortment of different texts, in an overall manuscript tradition whose complexities are difficult to unravel. The manuscripts themselves were produced across an area ranging from Flanders to Italy, and manifest varying degrees of Italian influence on the French language of the texts. …
